This month we discuss:

  • Having defensive positioning in portfolios is important, however we would argue that where fixed income markets are positioned now, cash can provide a return in excess or equal to that of government bonds with a reduced risk profile.
  • In recent years, private markets – or illiquid investments – have become a crucial part of portfolio management in regions such as Europe. This is due to low-income returns from the public markets, especially on the back of low or even negative interest rates in fixed income.
  • The S&P 500 in the Unites States (US) has not fallen by more than 20 per cent since the last recession. As such the S&P 500 has been in a “bull market” that on the 22nd August became the longest ever “bull market”. The natural question for many is how long will this last?
